Adventures into the New Economies of Catalonia
In June 2015, Hannah and I went on an adventure. Like explorers of old we traveled into the unknown, following myths and legends of a civilisation far more advanced than our own.
But we weren’t funded by wealthy benefactors to find rare antiquities for the British Museum. Far from it. Instead, we were funded by the citizenry of Exeter to go to Catalonia and find out about their new economy movement there. We’d read about the Cooperativa Integral Catalana, which appeared to be making big movements beyond the capitalist system and creating networks which operated for and with people and their needs. We’d read about Enric Duran, who had performed a huge bank heist without breaking any laws. We’d read about people self-organising, working together without the state and without the market. They called it Autogestió. We’d read as much as we could and we wanted to see it, talk to the people that are part of it and bring those conversations back with us to show the new economy movement here in the UK.
With huge thanks to the crowd who funded the trip, to the people who spoke to us in Catalonia and to each other keeping ourselves sane piecing the film together back home, we give you… Autogestió
The version above is a standard quality version of the film for easy streaming. For the full HD version please get in touch with us and we’ll send you the link for the download.
Due to a bit of microphone trouble there are a couple of parts which are difficult to hear. Please download the Autogestio Transcript so you don’t miss anything. We couldn’t cut these parts out since they’ve got some fascinating bits of information in!
Making this film has hugely benefited us personally too – we had an incredible experience, met some fascinating people and learned a lot, first hand, about film-making. The funds we raised through the crowdfund covered the cost of the journey, but beyond that there’s only so much we can do in our spare time. Just in case anyone out there is so inclined we’ll pop a donation button below with an indication to what that donation could go to. We’re still filming and every penny will go toward making more, and better, videos revealing more of the goings on of the new economy. Thanks!
